Measure the room in which you want to install a bar. Transfer these measurements to 1/4-inch graph paper. Draw in the walls, windows, skylights, doors, openings, fittings and fixtures. Note the location of the closest plumbing, light fixtures, outlets and switches. If you are borrowing space from an adjacent room, sketch in that room as well. Label your room and measurements.
Tape tracing paper over your graph paper on a table. Sketch in how you think the bar will fit into the room.
Draw cabinets the correct depth from walls. Create a 3 1/2-foot walk space if your bar has wraparound counters. Mark the locations of under-counter refrigerators, coolers, kegs, wine machines or any other fixture or feature. Use a plastic template with bar features to help you sketch in the details.
Remove your tracing paper and tape a new layer of tracing paper over the graph paper. Draw a second bar different from your first drawing. Shape your bar in a new way -- add curves, make it open, move it to a different wall. Create four or five different bar designs. Push yourself to try new shapes. Often such design exercises will produce a design you hadn't initially considered.
Place a fresh layer of tracing paper over your graph paper. Trace the walls of the room and the basic room measurements. Add in your favorite bar design. Mark and label each element of the design in easy-to-read print lettering. This will become your working floor plan. Take the plan to a photocopier store and make 10 copies.
Write up a list of the exact features and materials you want to use for your bar. List the brand or type of cabinet, the finish and the hardware. Include the type of counter, floor, fixtures, names of products, back splash, light fixtures and any other details. Price out your materials list based on retail prices you have researched in your local stores. Add up your material costs. Make copies of your materials list.
Send a copy of your floor plan and materials list to recommended, licensed contractors whose reputations you have checked. Ask for a written estimate to construct the bar and provide a date when the bid must be received by you. Compare your bids.
