Mosaic Installation

Mosaic is the art of forming patterns or images by assembling small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. This artwork can be dated back to the ancient Roman and Egyptian cultures, where they assembled the images with individual pieces. Today, a mosaic can be created with small cubic pieces or mosaic tiles that are available in paper-backed sheets that hold the mosaic pattern on them. Mosaic tiles are often used for kitchen backsplashes, in bathroom showers and on floors. Technology has made installing mosaic tiles much easier, but certain steps still need to be followed.

Instructions

    • 1

Create grid lines with chalk on this surface you wish to install the tile. Make sure the grid's squares are the same size as the mosaic tile sheets, since you will be using the grid as a guide.

    • 2

Mix the epoxy parts together. Typically there needs to be one part epoxy hardener and one part epoxy resin, but this can vary according to the brand of epoxy.

    • 3

Apply a layer of epoxy adhesive to the surface with a trowel that has a notched edge. Add an adequate amount of adhesive so it is about 1/4 inch thick and covers just inside the outer chalk lines you drew.

    • 4

Set the first square sheet of mosaic tiles on the epoxy. Rest a beater block on top of the sheeting and carefully push the tiles into the epoxy with a rubber mallet.

    • 5

Repeat this process for each mosaic tile sheet until you are finished. Allow the tiles to dry for 24 hours before proceeding.

    • 6

Apply the tile grout color of your choice on top of the tile sheets by using a trowel. Push the mortar into the cracks between the tiles and wipe the tile surface with a damp sponge. Wait for the grout to dry for at least 24 hours.
