How to Design a Stool From a Riding Saddle

To design something you have to think outside of the box. You have an idea, but how can you make it functional. Taking a saddle, which is something you sit in, and converting it to a design for a stool, another thing you sit on, may seem simple, but you can use you imagination however you like. When you are done, you will have a piece of furniture that exudes your personal taste and style.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in a few saddles. Decide which saddle you like the most. Decide whether you want to use the whole saddle or a part of it as the seat.

    • 2

Draw what you want the seat of the stool to look like. If you use the whole saddle, do you want to include the stirrups? If you use only the front of the saddle how will you incorporate this into the seat? Have a few ideas.

    • 3

Design how you want the base to look. If you use the whole saddle, maybe make the base look like a saddle rack or even a horse. If you use just a part of the saddle, think of the most appropriate base.

    • 4

Find a computer program that will allow you to design your stool in three dimensions.

    • 5

Take your design to a carpenter who you feel comfortable working with. If you do not know a carpenter, ask friends or hardware stores. Work with the carpenter on your design; he might have some suggestions on structure.

    • 6

Consider making more stools, and perhaps marketing them to a furniture store or horse tack store.
