What to Look for in a Sun Porch

Sun porches can be wonderful places to relax and enjoy the outdoors. While it's unnecessary for the space to be grand to be enjoyable, it should have some fundamental elements. Look for these basic factors in building or upgrading an ideal sun porch for your home.
  1. Structural Issues

    • Assess the foundation of the sun porch as well as the frame. Often sun porches have an aluminum frame, but may also be an extension of a wood deck. Thoroughly consider how the space will be used. If it will be used in the evening, ensure there are electrical outlets to incorporate lighting, if desired. Use rot-resistant materials on areas where moisture can potentially seep in.

    Style

    • Take into consideration the style of the main house and how important it is to merge it with the sun porch. If your main house has an Arts and Crafts flair, for example, carry over the same style of beams or columns onto the sun porch for a cohesive look. Don't overlook color on the sun porch. Paint walls, and perhaps the floor, in colors that complement or match the main house.

    Space

    • Evaluate the dimensions of the sun porch to ensure there is adequate space for the intended functions. Think about how the space will be used, such as for lounging or grilling, and the maximum number of people that will use it. It may be necessary to add additional square footage, or condense the area if a more intimate setting is desired.

    Furnishings

    • When furnishing a sun porch, make the pieces both fashionable and durable. Outfit the space with sofas and chairs designed especially to withstand the elements. Resin and teak are two good options. A classic swing with pillows provides the perfect spot to relax while enjoying the breeze from a vintage or ceiling fan.
