Instructions

    • 1

Select deep gem hues for the bedroom. The decor of India most commonly features gem-inspired hues, such as brilliant crimsons and bold blues. Select a collection of these deep colors to feature in your space, mixing four or five dominant colors as is Indian tradition. To make the selection of these hues easier, visit the painting section of your home improvement store and pick up some sample squares.

    • 2

Cover the floor with a bold printed rug. Purchase a rug featuring your selected hues with a bold Indian print to cover your plain carpet or hardwood floor. Place this rug centrally in your bedroom.

    • 3

Paint your walls or add draperies to them. Select a few of your hues and purchase paint in the colors, painting each of the walls a different color. For a softer look, attach a long rod to the top of each wall and hang draperies in these hues.

    • 4

Select Indian-inspired bed linens. Because your bed is likely the most dominant piece of furniture in your bedroom, Indian-inspired bed linens are a must for making your space feel Indian. Purchase solid-colored bed linens in your jewel tones or, better yet, buy printed bed linens with Indian prints. Do not be afraid to mix and match as this is common in Indian decor.

    • 5

Use soft seating such as large pillows and ottomans. Hard, structured seating is uncommon in Indian decor. Instead of a sofa or chair for your bedroom, use a plush ottoman in an Indian print or in one of the colors you selected. Add some oversized pillows for additional seating.

    • 6

Paint bold Indian prints on wooden furniture. Strip or sand these pieces if using pre-finished woods. Then paint the pieces a solid hue, using one of your selected featured colors. Use the additional colors to add geometric prints like those found in Indian rugs or paintings.

    • 7

Add throws to furniture to reflect the selected hues. Purchase several throws in your selected gem hues and place them on a chair or an ottoman in your bedroom. Use them to cover your dresser or nightstand, or hang them from the edge of your footboard.
