Uses for Rusted Tin

Rusted tin adds an old-fashioned and rustic touch to its surroundings. Whether you use it as a wall covering or a design element, rusted tin is a warm addition to your room. You can find rusted tin at flea markets, second-hand shops and salvage stores. Oftentimes, you can purchase rusted tin panels of old buildings before they're demolished. Wear gloves and cut your rusted tin panels to shape and size using tin snips.
  1. Walls

    • Use full-sized rusted tin panels to create a unique focal wall. Make a rectangular room look more square by covering one short wall with rusted tin. Create wainscoting by covering the bottom half of your room's walls with rusted tin. Trim the wainscoting with 1-by-2 lumber that's been painted or stained to create a batten and board look to your walls.

    Ceiling

    • Cover your ceiling with equal-sized squares of rusted tin to recreate an antiqued tin ceiling appearance in your home. Cut rusted tin into long strips and apply them to your ceiling in the same manner as a wooden floor and you'll have a tin ceiling completely different from most.

    Decor

    • Rusted tin can be used in a variety of decorative manners, bringing a rustic, country feel to your home. Replace the insets of cabinet doors with rusted tin. Cover outdated fireplace bricks with rusted tin. Replace lamp shades with rusted punched tin. Replace worn side table tops with rusted tin panels. Create wall art by punching a decorative design into a square of rusted tin and framing it for display. Make your own candle sticks by cutting 4-by-4 blocks of wood to size. Band the bottom and top with a ring of rusted tin and top it with candles.

    Garden

    • Cut rusted tin into panels and add a top. Hang a clapper in the center and hang it by your door for a unique bell. Cover a wooden box with rusted tin, and plant flowers in the box. Wrap the rusted tin around a used water fountain or bird bath for a patina yard decoration. Cut squares from your tin panel similar to a checkerboard. Weld four panels together and set it over the top of your garden lights.
