Flooring Options for Kids

When designing a room for kids, you want to choose flooring that is both durable and safe. Most flooring materials will work in a child's room, but some will work better than others depending upon your taste, the room design and your child's needs. Some are more durable than others. Some contain hypoallergenic properties and other materials are more absorbent.
  1. Interlocking Mats

    • Foam mats interlock with each other like puzzle pieces. Interlocking mats are ideal if you are trying to keep kids off your carpet, or to protect kids from hard surfaces. These mats are a non-permanent solution; they can be placed over carpet or other flooring and can be removed at any time. The mats come in a variety of colors that will engage your child's imagination and are made of foam to absorb the impact of any fall or tumble. The foam in the mats will absorb spills, making them more difficult to clean. But dirty pieces are easy to replace.

    Rubber

    • Rubber flooring is commonly found in gymnastics and karate studios but can be installed in a child's room as well. Rubber floors are used to absorb impact and are slip resistant, so they will work well in any setting where kids play. They also come in a variety of designs that can work with almost any decor. Rubber floors are also stain resistant, don't respond to humidity, and contain hypoallergenic qualities and antimicrobial properties that prevent mold and fungi growth, according to GharExpert. The downside is that rubber does need to be cleaned regularly and liquid that is allowed to sit on the surface loosens the adhesive.

    Bamboo

    • A strand bamboo flooring is more resistant to wear and tear than other bamboo flooring types. It is also a green, environmentally-friendly option. This flooring will not have to be replaced as your child matures, and it is fine when you decide to use the room for more adult purposes. Bamboo flooring is slippery when wet, so the floors will need to be cleaned often. Placing area rugs over the bamboo flooring will increase the longevity of the floor.

    Carpet

    • Carpet provides a soft surface and comes in a variety of textures and designs. An extra-thick padding can be placed underneath the carpet to add to its absorption. Generally, carpet is more affordable than other flooring options like bamboo or wood and can be cleaned with a household steam cleaner. It is not always the best option for children that have severe allergies because carpet traps dust and dust mites.
