Where to Place a Broom Closet

When planning the layout and function of a home, the broom closet is sometimes given little consideration, but is one of the most frequented spots in a home. Homeowners spend some portion of each day or week doing routine housework, and a well-equipped and organized broom closet makes completing the tasks much easier. The placement of a broom closet is as individual as one house is from another.
  1. Placement

    • Place a broom closet wherever space allows. Many new homes are designed with a broom closet as a part of the laundry room. But, if your home is not designed with this feature, some portion of the kitchen is also a good place for the broom closet. It is the one room that is most central to most clean ups. A corner of the nearby garage, if your home has one, is also a good option.

    Tools

    • Aside from a broom, the broom closet is an ideal place to store a vacuum cleaner, household cleaners, cloths, and some frequently-needed tools like a screwdriver or hammer.

    Organizing

    • Make use of wall-mounted organizers either on the back of a wall or inside the closet. It will keep cleaning tools off the floor, such as long-handled brooms, and will serve as an ideal place for mops to dry. If wall space is at a premium, install individual spring clips to store and organize tools. Keep bottles of cleaning supplies in a bucket to make it easier to transport them from room to room.

    Considerations

    • If you lack the space to dedicate solely to a broom closet, use part of a pantry, the back of a door or the corner of any room. For especially large homes, it will save time to have a broom closet on each floor to accommodate cleaning room on both levels. Purchase an inexpensive storage cabinet and outfit with hooks to hang tools and store supplies.
