What Kind of Tile Is Used for Inside a Shower?

Tile is a popular choice for lining shower walls and floors. Some reasons many people select tile for their showers is because it is durable and long lasting, usually easy to clean and it comes in a wide variety of different shapes and colors. When you are selecting tile for your shower, be aware that there are many different types from which to choose. Do your homework before making a final decision.
  1. Ceramic

    • Ceramic tiles is commonly used in showers. Ceramic tiles can come in many different colors, shapes and sizes. It also can be either glazed or unglazed. Be aware that if you choose glazed ceramic, you should select something else for the floor of the shower. This type of ceramic tile can become very slippery, so it should only be used on walls. Ceramic tiles are often less expensive than other types, so it might work best within your budget.

    Porcelain

    • Porcelain tiles are also commonly used in showers and are actually ceramic tiles that are made with more purified and highly refined materials. Because of this porcelain tiles are denser and more rugged than regular ceramic tiles. Porcelain tiles also come in a wide variety of colors and sizes.

    Stone

    • Another common choice for showers is stone tile. Marble tiles most often come in earth tones, like deep greens and browns. Avoid polished marble for shower floors because it can become very slippery when it is wet. Granite, slate and quartz-based stone tiles are also good options for a shower. Keep in mind that many types of stone are porous, so you likely will need to seal it.

    Glass

    • Many people choose glass tiles for their showers because it is easy to use and comes in an almost limitless variety of colors, sizes and shapes. Glass tiles will not absorb water, which gives them a longer life than many stone tile options. However, they can chip easily, so you will have to be more careful when working with them. Cut your glass tiles and create a mosaic for more visual appeal in your shower.
