How to Divide a Shared Kids Room

Whether for lack of space in the house or other reasons, sometimes two kids have to share one bedroom. Divide and rearrange the bedroom to give the illusion of two separate rooms to allow each child his own privacy and individual personal space. Decorate each area to fit each child's needs, taste and personality and separate each child's belongings to reduce conflict, such as splitting the closet area and having two separate dressers or storage areas.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the room into two different areas, each having access to the bedroom door, by placing each child's bed on separate sides of the room. Create privacy and split the room by placing a large standing screen, a long curtain fastened to the ceiling or built-in bookshelves in the center of the room. Avoid dividing the room with lightweight dressers or shelves placed away from the walls in young children's rooms, as they can easily fall down or be knocked over.

    • 2

Set up the room so each child has access to the same items to reduce fighting. Place a nightstand and lamp next to each bed and a small bookcase with storage bins so each child can keep her belongings and books separate. Organize the closet by dividing down the center with a board or curtain and give each child bins, baskets and hooks on each side of the closet to store her belongings and clothes.

    • 3

Make the most of storage options, especially smaller rooms, by giving each child a variety of storage choices that fit the size of the room, such as shelving, trunks by the foot of the beds, under-the-bed bins and toy hammocks to store stuffed animals and dolls on the walls.

Allow each child to choose a wall color and decorations for their side of the room to create a personalized space. Coordinate with matching linens, curtains, if applicable and a small rug so each child has a space he can call his own and be comfortable. Put up pictures and decorations of each child's choosing as well as personal awards on each side of the room to complete the look.

Create a shared space in the room where both children can socialize with a small play table area, art easel or desk for homework. Allow both children to choose decor and knick-knacks for the shared area and assign time slots for each child for nightly homework at the desk to reduce fighting over the space.
