Figure out how you want to divide up your open space before you begin to decorate. Some places, such as lofts, will have no partitions between rooms, so plan what room will go where before decorating.
Set up rooms with dividers or furniture based on how you planned out your space. Some use room dividers, while others place different rugs in each space to connote different rooms.
Purchase the type of furniture you want to use in your space. Modern furniture that appears sleek and smooth tends to look better in wide-open spaces than furniture that is lumpy or old fashioned. Arrange the furniture so your living area takes advantage of the sunlight while your bed is placed in area that is darkest.
Choose lighting fixtures that work in places with high ceilings, such as chandeliers.
Place a large wooden table and chairs where you will have meals. Make sure the table reflects the ambiance of the room.
Choose accessories based on your personal taste. Colorful art and pillows add character to the room. Choose art that won't get swallowed by the high walls. Vertical pieces work better than horizontal.
Set up a large entertainment center on a blank wall. Install a large-screen television or use the wall to project films.
