Glaze the walls. To add light reflectivity to gray walls, paint over the color with a glaze. These glazes are available in a variety of effects from metallic to opalescent. Apply this glaze with a regular paintbrush for a uniform effect or use a sponge or rag for a textured effect.
Hang window sheers. Instead of solid curtains, which block light, hang window sheers in a room that is painted gray. This will help increase the natural light in the room while still providing privacy. Choose sheers in a shade of pure white or a light gray.
Place mirrors opposite windows to increase the amount of light. This has the added benefit of making the space seem larger than it is. Look for ornate mirrors with a silver or black frame for an extra decorative touch.
Hang vibrant wall art in the room. Colors such as red will instantly brighten up a gray room and add visual interest. Use art prints with colors such as red, black and white. Select black frames for this artwork to contrast with the gray walls. You can also use decorative plates in vibrant colors or even wall tapestries.
Add wall sconces and more lighting to the room. Hanging wall sconces will help brighten gray walls during the evening and nighttime hours. These will require professional installation by a trained electrician. If this isn't in your budget, place plenty of accent lighting around the room, such as on tables that are flush with the wall.
