Select a quiet area in the house to make your library. Choose a room that has a door you can close or an area that is away from daily noises. Avoid locations that are close to the television or your children‘s play space.
Use bookshelves that extend from the floor to the ceiling. Consider adding shelving that mounts over windows and doorways. This will allow you to have more books in limited space.
Plan the spacing of the furniture for your library. Keep the area as open and uncluttered as possible. You might find that a chair and sofa or a couple of chairs and a small table work better in a small space than a larger seating arrangement.
Use minimal treatments on windows to allow natural lighting to flow through. Place lamps on tables, or set standing lamps slightly behind the reader. This will allow indirect lighting that is bright but comfortable for reading.
Choose a system for placing books on the shelves. Make it simple for family members to find their favorite books by grouping books together by subject, author’s name or alphabetically by title.
