Underwater Themes for a Kid's Bedroom

Mermaid Theme

• Create an underwater mermaid theme for a little girl's bedroom. Paint the walls a deep blue to resemble the ocean and place vinyl wall decals of bubbles, starfish, seaweed and mermaids around the room. Use frilly colorful blankets with a mermaid pattern on the bed with a variety of small pillows shaped like stars and fish. Hang long, sheer curtains on the windows and above the bed, attached to the ceiling, to create a private mermaid castle. Complete the mermaid theme bedroom with other underwater-inspired items around the room, such as frames adorned with shells and mermaid statues.

Shark Theme

• Make an exciting underwater theme bedroom for a young boy where sharks are the main attraction. Paint the walls and the ceiling an ocean blue to create the feeling of being underwater and place large vinyl wall decals of sharks on the walls. Paint the furniture, such as the headboard, tables and desk, in a brown wood color to suggest sunken ships and place a large chest at the foot of the bed for storage. Use linens in ocean colors of greens and blues or a shark pattern to keep with the theme. Place shark memorabilia around the room with shark statues, shark tooth replicas or a large 3D shark on the wall for an eye-catching decoration to complete the look.

Coral Reef Theme

• Design an underwater theme bedroom to resemble a colorful coral reef, perfect for a young boy or girl. Paint the walls deep blue and paint or purchase large murals of seascapes depicting coral reefs to go on all walls in the bedroom. Use bed linens with a fish pattern or in a deep coral color and use pillows shaped like fish, starfish and sea horses. Create a relaxing and tranquil atmosphere by using recessed lighting in the room and place a fish tank on a small table near the bed for a white noise effect.
