How to Decorate With Flagstone Floors

If you have flooring composed of flagstone tiles, decorating a room can seem like a challenge at first. Flagstone is natural stone flooring that typically comes in shades of brown and gray, with hints of tan and blue. In order to allow the flooring to be the focal point in the room, color choices are very important. You do not want to overwhelm or detract from the natural beauty of this stone flooring by overloading the walls with colorful paint.

Select the right color group for wall colors. Flagstone comes in a variety of different colors, ranging in tone from pale gray, to slate blue and even to a warm beige color. These two groups cross both the cool and warm color spectrum. Gray is a neutral color, allowing color selection from either spectrum. Blue belongs in the cool spectrum, while beige belongs to warm. Avoid matching the wall color to the color of the stone, as this washes out the room. Choose coordinating or complementary colors. For gray, a crisp white wall with an accent wall done in charcoal gray would be ideal. For blue flagstone, choose a pale blue or green. For beige tones, ivory walls set off the tile nicely.

Create conversation areas with rugs. Heavy furniture can scrape flagstone floors. To avoid this, place area rugs underneath couches, chairs and tables. These rugs delineate conversation areas in a room. Choose rug colors that coordinate and pull from the colors of the flagstone tile. The rug pattern should not be bold or it will detract from the tile. Choose rugs in solid colors, or those with muted prints.

Choose the right style of furniture. Flagstone tiles mesh well with the following design schemes: modern, contemporary, rustic and elegant. Mixing clashing decor styles with flagstone flooring will create disunity in the space, even if it is only felt subconsciously. Use sleek furniture in colors that complement the flooring. For example, with blue tile, choose a dark navy or hunter green sofa. For gray flooring, pick white, black or even red. For beige flagstone, stick with the brown color group, but go darker, like a rich chocolate brown.

Hang draperies and place accessories in the room. The last step in decorating a room is finishing it off with the right drapes and accessories. Tab-top or grommet-top drapes go well with contemporary, modern or rustic design schemes. For an elegant touch, choose a rich suede fabric. Keep decor accessories minimal and reflective of your personal style, as well as the decor theme you have chosen for the room.
