Paint the walls a light color such as ivory. This will help give the room a light palette to set off the tan of the bedspread. Ivory will work particularly well if you have darker wood trim in the room. If you are updating the trim as well, paint it a dark chocolate brown to make the effect more dramatic.
Hang colorful draperies. Solid gold or dark brown colored drapes will serve two purposes in a bedroom. First, the darker color will help block out the light. Second, these colors will offset with the lighter colored walls and provide a dramatic accent for the room. You can also use red drapes for a bold look. If you prefer patterns, choose a pattern that includes the same tan as the bedspread.
Place a rug under the bed. A boldly patterned rug that contains the same tan as the bedspread will help make the color pop in the room. Choose a design that includes red, brown and tan, or choose a solid color that is darker than the bedspread. The color of your carpeting or wood flooring will impact the choice for your rug. If the flooring is light, choose a dark rug and, conversely, if the flooring is dark, choose a light rug. This will serve to create the bed as the focal point of the room.
Hang artwork around the bedroom. Above the bed, place a peaceful print done in neutral colors. Hang other pieces on different walls, using the same neutral color palette. If you have chosen to use red as an accent color, find a bold print that contains this color to hang over the bed. The print should be large — as large as the headboard, or bed, or as close to it as possible. This creates a dramatic area by the bed.
Add colorful lamps to the bed tables. This will help warm up the room even further and provide more visual interest. Lamps with black or red bases will help bring in more color to the room without overwhelming the bedspread. Instead, they will create a visual frame around the bed that draws more attention to it.
