How to Redo a Dresser for a Foyer

If you have an older dresser that isn't being used, it can be repurposed in a foyer as a place to put keys, flowers and for extra storage. Smaller dressers work best for a foyer, unless it is large enough to accommodate a larger piece. It is important to take extra care in redoing the dresser, since it will be a focal point at the entry of your home.

Sand the dresser completely. Whether you plan to paint or stain the dresser, the old finish will need to be taken off. You can use a medium-grade sandpaper by hand, or use an electric sander. If there are any flourishes in the wood, these will need to be done by hand to ensure that all of the finish is off, even in small areas. Remove the drawer pulls so you can get under those areas as well.

Stain or paint the dresser. If you stain the wood, choose a color that highlights the wood and go with your current color scheme. If you are painting the wood, choose a contrasting color that helps make the piece stand out. For example, if your foyer is painted with dark colors, choose a light paint color such as white or ivory for the dresser. If your foyer is done in light colors, choose a bold color such as red or black for the new paint.

Seal the dresser. Tto keep the finish from fading or the paint from peeling, apply a clear coat or varnish over the new paint or stain once it's dried. Foyers are high-traffic areas and keys and other sharp objects may be placed on the dresser. Protecting it with a clear coat will help maintain the finish.

Replace the drawer pulls. Put new drawer pulls on the dresser to give it an entirely new look. If you have a modern decor scheme in your home, choose brushed chrome or nickel drawer pulls. For an elegant design, wrought iron or brass-plated drawer pulls are ideal. For a simple country look, choose wooden drawer pulls and paint or stain them to match the piece.

Accessorize the dresser. Place a bowl in the middle to hold keys and other objects. Place a mirror on the wall behind the dresser to give the illusion of more space in the foyer and to help reflect any natural light.
