How to Decorate Plant Ledges to Give a Room a Completely New Look

A plant ledge is often considered to be "dead space" in decorating. It's a difficult area to reach and can be prone to catching dust. What may start out as a great decorative idea can turn into a dusty mess in a few months without proper care. You can use this space and decorate it with plant ledges to give a room a completely new look, without the need for constant dusting.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the back of the plant ledge. Choose a bright and bold accent color that goes with your current decor. If there's extra space above the plant ledge, use painter's tape to mark off an area about 1 to 2 feet above the ledge. Paint underneath the line. This creates a visual "box" for your display items as well as providing a dramatic new look for the ledge.

    • 2

Select the right kind of decorative accessories. Avoid very dark or light vases and sculptures, as these only show the dirt that can collect on a plant ledge. Choose decor items that are silver, brown or ivory. These colors don't show dirt as easily.

    • 3

Place a large accent piece in the center of the plant ledge as a focal point. Choose an item such as a boldly colored vase to contrast with the color you chose for the back of the plant ledge. If you chose brown for the back of the ledge, use an ivory vase in the center. If you chose dark blue, use a bright red vase for the center object.

Insert fake flowers or plants into the vase. Avoid lightly colored flowers or plants that show dust. Use a dried floral arrangement in colors that contrast with both the vase and the color of the painted ledge. The center arrangement should be large and dramatic. Use tall spikes of fake foliage in the back of the vase, and shorter clumps of flowers in the front.

Balance out the ledge. Place smaller sculpture or bowls of river rocks on either side of the vase in the center. It should be balanced, using the same amount of objects on both sides of the vase.

Dust the ledge as needed. The plant ledge should be dusted at least every three months or more if necessary. While these items will not show as much dirt as darker decor objects, over time they will get dusty.
