Paint unfinished wood cabinets from Ikea in interesting colors. You can paint the cabinets all one color or use multiple colors in different areas if you want to add extra color. Always use high gloss paint in a kitchen so you can easily clean the cabinets with soapy water, as oil and smoke tend to make cabinets look dirty quickly.
Replace handles and pulls. If you have antique appliances or a vintage color scheme, seek out antique or salvage hardware that fits your kitchen’s decor. Vintage and antique furniture stores in your area may have hardware you can purchase or be able to point you to someone that deals exclusively in hardware.
Paint fleurs-de-lis or other patterned stencils or hand-painted designs on the front of your cabinets to give them a customized look. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this yourself, you can find a local decorative artist or craftsman who will probably be able to do it fairly quickly at a low cost. Combine stenciled or painted designs with unique paint colors and hardware for a more detailed appearance.
Use two styles of cabinet that complement each other if you have a large kitchen or distinctly separate areas of the kitchen. Using different styles can also open up a room and make it appear larger by giving people more to look at. If you do use two different styles of cabinet, make sure they work together and consider customizing them in a different way, like painting them.
