How to Decorate on Top of Tall Pieces of Furniture

Display family photos on the tall furniture. Group several photos of the same size or place a large photo in the center with several small pictures around it.

Decorate the taller furniture with seasonal items. For instance, drape small lights over the furniture and display a nativity scene for Christmas. Use ceramic pumpkins and artificial cobwebs to create a Halloween scene.

Arrange your specialty dinnerware or housewares on taller furniture inside the kitchen. Use this space to display your special occasion items, including gravy boats or serving platters. Prop up the serving platter on a plate stand in the center of the arrangement. Surround the platter with other pieces from the set, including plates, cups, saucers and the gravy boat. Display the plates and saucers on plate stands as well.

Display cascading plants on top of the taller furniture. Set a planter filled with jasmine, lipstick vines or other indoor vines. Allow the plants to grow down the sides of the furniture or hang a trellis from the wall to encourage the plants toward a door or archway.

Arrange valuables that are not appropriate for display around children. Take advantage of the furniture’s height to showcase an heirloom vase or expensive statues that are not safe around children and pets. Group the items together with the tallest piece, such as an urn or vase, in the center with smaller pieces surrounding it.

Illuminate the items displayed on the tall furniture with track lighting, wall sconces or miniature gallery spotlights. Draw attention to the decorative pieces or seasonal wares by pointing the light toward them.
