Functional Uses for Window Seating

Reading Nook

• No matter where your window seat, you can add a plump cushion to the surface of the bench area of the window seat, throw pillows all around and comfortable blankets to make a cozy reading nook. For best results, use a foam cushion on the seat area that is several inches thick, so you can relax and sit or lay back in comfort for several hours. You can cover the foam with fabric and glue it in place, or make a removable slipcover if you sew. Throw pillows in a variety of sizes and prints will allow you to adjust yourself into the most comfortable position possible with your book of choice.

Extra Sleeping Area

• A window seat can serve as an extra sleeping space for guests with the use of a cot mattress or extra-thick foam cushion cut to size. You can purchase a cot mattress at most big box and camping supply stores; if the standard cot mattress size won’t fit your window seat, you can have ultra thick and plush foam cut to size at a home decor supply shop. An additional layer of memory foam or a featherbed will add even softness to the bedding layer. You can make a removable, fitted slipcover for the mattress and add layers of soft bedding for your guest as needed.

Bookshelf and Display Area

• You window seat can be more than just a resting and seating area; it can also be a built-in bookcase, display and storage area. You can build in bookcase shelves on either side of your window seat for a custom look and use them to display your collectibles as well as your books. This type of structure works especially well in little girl’s bedrooms, libraries and offices where there is plenty of room for a snuggly reading nook paired with spacious shelving.

Storage

• You can make the most of your window seat by pairing built-in storage areas to the inside or underneath the seat areas. Built-in drawers underneath the seat give you space to place linens, blankets or other items you want to keep within easy reach but stored out of the way. For a larger storage space, you can make the seat itself hinged, leaving a large space inside the seat that you can use for items you don’t need often, such as holiday decorations.
