Division Wall Ideas

A multipurpose space, such a combination craft space and guest room or office and bedroom, are ideal for some homes or apartments. Sometimes, however, more privacy or more well-defined separation is desired or required. If you find yourself in this situation, try one of several inventive and eye-catching division wall ideas.
  1. Furniture

    • Creatively arrange furniture so it can function as a division wall. Place a piece such as a decorative shelving unit, an entertainment center or a couple of bookcases between the two areas that need to be divided. Another option is a folding screen. You can buy an ornate Japanese shoji screen, or make your own folding screen by simply attaching three or four doors, fence panels or similar raw materials to each other with hinges.

    Whimsy

    • Think outside of the separation box, and consider some imaginative division wall solutions. Line up a row of tall vases containing even taller spray-painted branches or decorative sticks. You can use a large fish tank or some greenery, such as a row of large potted plants or, if you don’t have a green thumb, artificial trees. Or install a ceiling-mounted track to hang curtains between the two zones. Use opaque or sheer fabric according to how much privacy you want.

    Concept

    • Go for a more abstract approach to dividing the spaces. Instead of physical, use visual techniques, a method that is especially ideal if you’re planning on only a temporarily space separation. Create a suggested, instead of an actual, line of delineation between the spaces. Painting the walls in each area distinctly different colors will enhance the feeling of division, and strategically arranging the furniture will create two separate zones. You might also incorporate lighting and area rugs.

    Partition

    • Another good option is the use of a temporary wall. These movable interior walls are constructed of such materials as acrylic, wood or glass. Some manufacturers will even come to your home, office or apartment and put the wall together for you. The structures are sturdy, look good, and provide the required division you need. Look online or in home furnishing stores to find a temporary wall that works for your tastes and budget.
