Remodeling Ideas for Kitchen Posts

Decorative and functional posts appear in both newer homes and older construction. The architect uses posts as decorative elements that give the kitchen a more modern feel. Depending on the design of your home, the posts may have a functional purpose as load-bearing supports. Use remodeling ideas that give the kitchen posts a new look without removing them from the room.
  1. Tile the Posts

    • Make the kitchen look brighter and larger with mirrored glass tiles. The glass tiles reflect natural and artificial light, and as the light bounces off the walls, it makes the room look bigger. For a different take on the idea, use ceramic tiles in shades that complement or match your kitchen decor and mix in a few mirrored glass tiles. Choose lighter colored tiles, as darker tiles have a tendency to look heavy. Use small tiles, such as tiles 1 inch square, and attach the tiles directly to the posts with grout.

    Decoupage It

    • Turn your kitchen posts into an area that highlights your family and their favorite things. Make copies of family photographs, awards, ticket stubs and other paperwork that reminds you of past experiences and family vacations. Cover the posts with decoupage glue and press the paper pieces over the glue. Overlap the edges of each piece, giving it a collage-style effect. Use a layer of decoupage glue over the top, which keeps the pieces from peeling off the posts.

    Dramatic Look

    • Give your kitchen a dramatic look by painting the posts a color that contrasts with the walls. For example, paint the walls a pale shade like cream or eggshell white and paint the posts navy blue or hunter green. If your walls already have a darker color, then opt for a lighter color on the kitchen posts. The new color turns the posts into a focal point for the room and highlights the architectural elements.

    Family Center

    • If your family spends a lot of time together in the kitchen, then make those posts into a family center. Paint each post with magnetic chalkboard paint. The paint turns the posts into a chalkboard, but the finish is also magnetic. Hang a few magnets on the posts and use a magnetic chalk holder. Leave notes for the family or your spouse on the posts and display handwritten notes with the magnets. Write down recipes and even play tic-tac-toe on the chalkboard posts.
