Two-story Fireplace Ideas

Two-story fireplaces add a sophisticated and grand look to any space. A fireplace that takes up such a large area typically serves as a natural focal point in the room. Make the fireplace work for you and your decorating style, whether you're building a new fireplace or working with one that's already there.
  1. Material

    • The fireplace surround design will impact the overall look and feel of the fireplace. Stone, brick, marble, tile or veneer are common options. Rough stone works for rustic, traditional or sophisticated decor, while a marble surround would likely look out of place in a lodge or cabin but will set the right tone in a sophisticated space. Smooth, clean finishes are best for contemporary decor. Brick, tile and veneer can work for most styles and decor, depending on the design and color.

    Design

    • Build the surround all the way up the two-story space in the shape of a chimney -- the top will be narrower than the bottom -- if you want a traditional look. A solid rectangular shape that goes all the way up is another option. Some surrounds can expand past the fireplace and include built-in shelving, niches, seating areas or other architectural designs. Consider the view when designing and decorating the fireplace. For example, some fireplaces are two- or three-sided, allowing it to be enjoyed from multiple rooms or angles.

    Decor

    • Decorate the fireplace to solidify it as the focal point of the room and make it part of the decor. Hang large nature prints over the fireplace. Mirrors, large family portraits or prized artwork are other options. Track lights can shine directly onto the artwork, drawing more attention. Flank the fireplace with matching candelabras for an elegant or traditional look. Alternatively, hang a chandelier in front of the fireplace in lieu of artwork or mirrors.

    Mantel or Hearth

    • Use tall or large items to decorate the mantel or hearth if your fireplace has one. Small items will look out of place next to a two-story fireplace. Instead, opt for a tall vase with large flowers, dried bamboo, cherry blossoms or other tall arrangements. Large pottery is another option. Line the mantel or hearth with a candle arrangement if you like the look of candles on a fireplace. Use a single color and a variety of different candle sizes. Pillars or thick candles will work best against the large fireplace.
