How to Make Bamboo Walls

Bamboo is used to make furniture, rugs and buildings. It can also be used as a wall covering that comes in finishes ranging from light to dark and in different designs. On average, a bamboo wall covering is 1/16 inches thick, has a cotton net backing to make it easy to glue to a wall, and features slats of bamboo 1/2 inch wide. Giving your walls a new, warmer look with bamboo can give your space a tropical feel.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the wall being covered with the bamboo wall covering. Multiply the height and width together. This is the square footage of wall covering you will need to purchase.

    • 2

Lay out the wall coverings on the floor, cotton backing side up, and piece together how they will be placed on the wall. You want to start in a corner of the wall and end in a corner. Try to keep seams, or areas where two pieces of covering meet, in discreet locations like doorways or window frames. Use a tape measure to ensure the wall covering measurements are exact. Draw lines with a carpenter pencil where the coverings will have to be cut to fit. Cut along the pencil lines with a miter saw so the pieces of wall covering fit together exactly on the wall.

Prime the wall with wallpaper primer using a paint roller. This will seal the drywall. Let it dry before continuing. Apply wallpaper paste to the back of the first sheet of bamboo wall covering with a paint roller.

    • 4

Hold the wall covering on the wall in the starting corner. You will need two people. Evenly apply pressure starting at the top and moving down in a vertical pattern.

Apply wallpaper paste to the back of the second piece. Line the piece up on the wall joining the first piece. Apply pressure vertically from top to bottom to adhere the piece to the wall. Continue this with the remaining pieces until the wall is covered.
