How to Increase Window Space for Overwintering Plants

Small, outdoor potted plants can be brought in to overwinter in the warmth of the house. Most species will need the warmth and nutrition provided by a sunny window to survive the cold winter months. You can expand the surface area available to store your plants and create a design feature in your home by installing removable shelving across your window in one or two tiers.

Things You'll Need

  • Brackets with a top support beam of at least 12 inches
  • Nails or Screws
  • 12-inch-wide planks or boards
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Saw (optional)
  • Stain (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of your plants. Knowing these dimensions early on will ensure that your shelf is built to the right specifications.

    • 2

Measure the width of your bottom windowsill and decide whether you'll use the sill itself to support some of your potted plants. Your decision will influence the design and number of shelves you'll need.

    • 3

Measure your windows from the outside of the window frame on the left to the outside of the window frame on the right. Add six inches on each side for a total of 12 extra inches to ensure space to install the brackets against the wall outside the window frame so that your plants will be securely supported. The final number is the length of your shelf or shelves.

    • 4

Mark the locations for your shelves on each side of the window with the pencil, making sure your marks are even with one another. If you want evenly-spaced shelving, measure the total height of your window and divide to determine exactly where you'll place your shelving. Divide the total number in half for a single shelf or by three for two shelves. If you have some tall and some short plants, space your shelving unevenly to accommodate.

    • 5

Cut the planks or boards to your desired dimensions, if necessary, using a saw.

    • 6

Stain the wood to a color that matches your decor. Add a waterproof finish to minimize damage from watering your plants. Allow the stain and finish to dry thoroughly before installation.

    • 7

Mount the brackets and shelves even with your pencil marks on the wall. Use a level to make sure your shelves are even side-to-side and front-to-back so that your plants don't slide off.

    • 8

Place your plants on the shelves with even spacing between them to ensure that each gets an adequate share of sunlight. Water your plants as needed throughout the winter.
