Decide the purpose of the room and evaluate what type of furnishings need to go into the room.
Take measurements of the room to accurately assess what can be placed into the room. Make a drawing to help better visualize the arrangement of main furniture pieces. Consider how traffic will flow in the space when planning the layout.
Find an architectural detail, such as a fireplace or large window, and use this as the focal point of the room. Use a piece of furniture as the focal point, such as an entertainment center, in the absence of such an architectural detail. Paint one wall of the oddly shaped room in a different hue to make it a focal point in the room.
Fill the dead spaces in your room with pieces that add substance to the room, like a Grandfather clock; texture, like a tall plant; or function, like a floor lamp.
