How to Access a Loft Ladder

Converting a loft or attic into living space can improve the comfort of your home and help accommodate your growing family. But you need a safe and reliable way to access that formerly unlivable space. Installing a set of folding loft stairs or a loft ladder allows you to climb into that space safely and easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the section of the ceiling the loft ladder folds down from. Look for a ceiling tile that looks different from the others or a small pull rope or chain.

    • 2

Stand on a step stool or other sturdy object so you can reach the pull chain, rope or exposed fastener on the loft stair access panel. Make sure the step stool is on level footing before you begin.

    • 3

Remove the fastener that holds the loft attic access panel in place. If the panel uses a rope or a chain, pull on it to bring the panel down. Pull the panel down far enough so that you can access the stairs without standing on the step stool.

    • 4

Grasp the bottom part of the loft stairs and fold them down. Continue unfolding the loft access ladder until it extends all the way down to the floor.

    • 5

Step on the bottom step of the loft ladder and test its sturdiness. Do not climb into the loft if the steps appear to be weak or broken. Use the stairs to access the loft if the steps are in good condition.
