How to Decorate a Mirrored Shelf

A mirrored shelf is very often a shelf with a mirror behind it, although it can be a shelf with mirrored sides or even a shelf with a mirror surface. The mirror throws back light, and can serve to make the room look larger. Whether your mirror shelf is directly at eye level or somewhat above, make sure that you decorate the shelf accordingly. A poorly decorated mirror shelf can make the room look cluttered, while one that is well decorated adds an engaging decoration to the room.

Place short, fat candles on low candle holders in front of the mirror on the shelf. Center one large candle or make a broader display by placing several candles of different lengths in front of the mirror. When the candles are lit, the mirror bounces back the light and lights up the room, and even when they are not lit, the candles create an attractive centerpiece-like display.

Drape fake vines around the mirror’s frame. Ivy vines or vines with flowers on them take away the harshness from the mirror’s edge while giving the room a natural, free-flowing look. Choose vines with flowers that match your home’s color theme, or choose dark ivy vines for a darker, more neutral look.

Place a single vase made of opaque glass or wood on the mirrored shelf. A single object like a vase prevents the shelf from looking cluttered and if the vase is a favorite item, it brings the vase into focus by giving it a space all on its own. This is a deliberately sparse look that does well in Spartan environments. Emphasize the single vase by placing a single stalk of flowers in it.

Hang a silk scarf off of the top corners of the mirror. Thin silk drapes well over harsh corners and the silk can flutter when breezes from the window come in. Choose silk that flatters the colors of the room and drape it over some of the mirror as well for a bohemian effect. Use an asymmetrical drape to emphasize a room’s eclectic décor.
