Decorating Ideas for a Tuscany-Style Fireplace Mantel

Tuscany is a northern region of Italy that includes a large area of countryside and Italian villas. Decorating in a Tuscan style includes addressing your fireplace and mantel. Adding architectural details, earth tone colors, Italian artwork and accessories to your fireplace mantel allows you to decorate your mantel in a manner fit for your own Italian villa-styled room.
  1. Materials

    • A Tuscan fireplace mantel should consist of certain materials. Wood, limestone, marble or soapstone are a few options that evoke a Tuscan feel. If these materials are too expensive for the project, use a cheaper alternative for a faux look of the stone.

    Shape

    • Tuscan furnishings often feature Renaissance-style architecture. Take your mantel's cues from this history. Add decorative columns under your mantel if it is already installed. Opt for an ornate mantel that wraps around and over the fireplace if you don't have a mantel yet. Claws add an authentic touch to the fireplace mantel. You can also build your mantel up and make it cover a larger portion of the wall. Use wood or stone as the backdrop to your mantel to make it more prominent. Add an arch of stone over the fireplace mantel to add architectural detail to the mantel area.

    Effects

    • Add special effects to your wood or stone fireplace mantel. Venetian plaster is one option. You can also add faux finishes to the fireplace mantel. Adding a whitewash effect will give the mantel a more vintage look, while stucco can give it an extra layer of texture.

    Art

    • Adding Italian artwork over your mantel can instantly transform the typical fireplace to a Tuscan one. Place a large picture of an Italian villa or Tuscan countryside over your fireplace mantel. As an alternative, place a small canvas painting on a small self-standing easel on top of the mantel. A wall tapestry is another option to infuse your fireplace mantel with the rustic colors of Tuscan style.

    Accessories

    • Add accessories in earth tones such as orange, red, gold and brown hues. Add terracotta pots on top of your mantel and fill them with sunflowers. Hang copper pots from the mantel if it is in the kitchen or dining areas. Place wrought iron accessories, such as candlestick holders or wall hangings. Add a plate stand with a mosaic patterned plate on it. Ceramics and pottery provide a burst of color against the mantel.
