How to Convert a Breakfast Nook Into an Office

One of the biggest challenges faced by new business owners is finding sufficient space for an office. Renting space can be prohibitively expensive, especially for a new startup, but finding suitable space at home is often a challenge as well. If you have an unused space in your home, like a seldom-used breakfast nook, you can convert that space into an office, without the hassle or expense of a full remodeling job.

Instructions

Clear away the clutter from your breakfast nook, and move those items to other places in your home. Store any items you do not need. Use the storage space you cleared away to keep CDs, files and other items related to your business.

    • 2

Measure the open space under the top of your breakfast nook to see if it can accommodate a small filing cabinet. If so, slide a filing cabinet against the back wall, and use it to keep your important paperwork close at hand.

    • 3

Replace your existing open-backed bar stools with bar stools that have sturdy, and preferably adjustable, back support. You will be spending a lot of time in your home office, and you want to make that time as comfortable and productive as possible. Look for bar stools that adjust to various heights and ones that roll easily on your kitchen or dining room floor.

Check the position of the electrical outlets in your kitchen and living room. Measure the space from the closest outlets to the breakfast nook. Do the same with the telephone cord if you plan to use a hardline phone instead of a cell or cordless phone.

    • 5

Place your power strip or UPS in a space that is out of the normal flow of traffic through the kitchen and dining room. You do not want to create a tripping hazard with loose cords, and you do not want to take the chance that someone will accidentally knock the cord from the wall.

Purchase a docking station for your laptop and place that docking station on top of the breakfast nook. You can use a desktop computer if you wish, but a laptop provides much more freedom and flexibility.

Keep a spare laptop battery plugged into the electrical outlet closest to the breakfast nook. Having a spare battery charged up and ready to go makes it easier when you have to meet with clients or travel for your business.
