How to Divide Your Room Into Two Parts

Having specific areas in your home with designated purposes helps maintain an organized and functional living space. A shared area can be divided to create privacy or to specify function. For example, dividing a shared bedroom gives kids privacy and a sense of personal space. Splitting a family room into a play area and a home office lets you keep your affairs organized while still being able to look after the kids. Incorporate one or more methods of separation, including use of furniture, wall paint and decorative partitions.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the room of furniture, books, toys or whatever else is in it.

    • 2

Determine if the room will be equally split in half, if one area will get a larger space or if there will be shared space within the room with designated spaces on each side.

    • 3

Measure the room to see how much space exists. Assuming the room is to be divided into two equal spaces, mark designated spaces with a pencil on the wall.

    • 4

Create a pattern through the room to paint with the same neutral color for tying the whole room together. Use painter's tape to line the walls with a border or stripe pattern. Lay drop cloths to protect floor coverings.

    • 5

Paint the pattern with the neutral color of your choice. Then paint one side of the room a second color and the other side a third color. Let the paint dry.

    • 6

Place partitioning furniture in the center of the room. This can be a bookshelf, conference table or panel divider. For greater synthesis of the room, paint the center partition the same color as the neutral room color.
