How to Design Living Rooms With Corner Fireplaces

Corner fireplaces are beneficial to both large and small living rooms. The corner placement utilizes space, allowing plenty of real estate for furniture placement. Because of the odd angle, however, corner fireplaces present a design challenge to homeowners. Fortunately, there are various ways to arrange furniture around a corner fireplace.

Things You'll Need

  • Seating (sofa, loveseat, armchair, etc.)
  • Tables (side tables, coffee table, etc.)
  • Decorative accessories (vases, photographs, etc.)
  • Accents (throw pillows, rugs, curtains, etc.)
  • Corner shelf

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange your sofa and loveseat, or sofa and armchairs, to form an "L" shape around the fireplace. Place the sofa so that it is facing the fireplace, and also parallel to the corner. Set the loveseat beside the sofa to create an angled "L" shape. Seating around the fireplace is warm, cozy and inviting.

    • 2

Add a coffee table to the center of the room in front of the sofa. It should be parallel to both the sofa and fireplace. Place side tables on opposing ends of the sofa.

    • 3

Implement decorative accessories on the wall above the fireplace. Tall vases, family photographs and seasonal decor are appropriate pieces for a fireplace mantel. If the fireplace does not have a mantel, corner shelves are appropriate for displaying decorative pieces.

    • 4

Place a television set on a television stand beside the fireplace, or have a flat-screen panel television mounted in the corner of the fireplace above wall decorations.

    • 5

Pull the space together with potted plants and accents, such as a neutral-toned rug beneath the coffee table. Potted plants may be placed on opposing sides of the fireplace or near the entrance of the room. Throw pillows strewn about the sofa and loveseat will add comforting visual appeal. Coordinating lamps placed on side tables provide plenty of lighting for the room.
