Before you turn a drawer into a storage unit, you will need to make adjustments to the finish. After removing all of the hardware, with the exception of the drawer pull, take out any contact paper. Depending on how you are going to use the drawers, you can paint them a bright color, touch up the stain, or use sandpaper to create a rustic finish. Touch up the interior by gluing on a brightly-colored or patterned craft paper.
Drawers can be arranged in a variety of formations, depending on the type of storage solution you need. With a creative arrangement, they can double as an art piece. Stack drawers against the wall with the refinished interiors facing out and use them as custom bookcases; put shallow drawers on top of deep drawers to create a ledge for picture frames. Or, build simple covers and stack the drawers to create hidden storage. By using drawers of different sizes, you can customize a storage system that works with your space.
Turn old drawers into shelves to create hanging storage options. Remove the slide hardware and attach the shelves to the walls with screws or nails; hang them with the drawer pull on top for a creative decorative touch. Or, stack drawers on existing shelves to create storage for smaller items. In the kitchen, you can use them to organize spices; in the office, a drawer can hold your pens and supplies.
Because of their low height and small size, you can use drawers to increase storage under your beds and furniture. Install small wheels or casters on the bottom of the drawers to make it easier to slide them into place. Keep the dust out of your items by building simple flat covers to fit on top of the drawers.
