How to Divide a Finished Room

Even in a finished room, it is sometimes necessary to divide the space to make it multifunctional. Dividing a large room particularly helps to visually break up the space. While the decision to divide a finished room comes with some expense, it is far less than that of adding on a completely separate space. Wall dividers are also flexible in their design, offering the added benefit of texture in addition to defining spaces.

Instructions

    • 1

Take measurements in the room to determine what size divider best suits the space.
Evaluate whether the divider needs to be permanent or temporary and then choose the best material for your project.

Install a temporary wall partition with vertical wall studs attached to top and bottom plate faces. Affix the studs and place faces to the permanent wall with drywall screws through the studs. Drywall the surface and finish with primer and paint or wallpaper.

Install a permanent half-wall with studs, bottom plates and drywall screws. Secure the plates and studs in the premeasured area. Complete the half-wall frame and position it on the bottom plates. Attach 1/2-inch drywall to each side of the frame. Prime and paint the drywall or cover it with wallpaper.

Divide the room with an upholstered screen, Japanese screen or a row of bookshelves. Use a row of tall plants like palms or ficus to create a natural, temporary wall.
