Decorating With Sectionals

Sectionals can offer a lot of seating in a small area and are available in a variety of shapes, styles and colors that fit just about any room décor. Sectionals also offer comfortable seating, with plenty of room to sprawl across while watching a movie, reading a book or lying in front of the fireplace. Just as the word sectional suggests, this type of couch is made up of several different sections that can be moved around to change the look and feel of a room.
  1. Selection

    • The size and shape of your room determines the type of sectional you need to decorate it. Sectionals come in multiple pieces that can be purchased all together as a set or individually for a custom look. Different sectional pieces include those with or without arms, single seating, double seating and chaise lounges sections that can all be mixed and matched to fit your decorating needs. Some furniture stores do not always have all of the pieces of a sectional set out on display, so when shopping ask to see the catalog so you can look at all of the different options and select pieces that will work in your room.

    Location

    • Where you place your sectional can change the look of a room almost instantly. For a floating design, pull the sectional back from the wall, place a buffet-style table behind it and hang a large painting on the wall over it. If you have an oversized living room you can place the sectional so the couch separates the large room into two smaller sitting areas. The chaise lounge section of the couch can be placed in front of a window or sliding glass door, offering a place to read or daydream while looking out the window.

    Styles

    • Sectionals are made in different styles, designs and colors, offering unlimited decorating options. Style options include two-toned sectionals, such as a black frame with white cushions, floral patterns, solid colors, stripes and other designs. Sectionals can be made with large back cushions or multiple pillows that can be rearranged and changed out as desired. Different colored and designed throw pillows can be added to accent the couch and enhance the design of the room.

    Setup

    • Just because the sectional was sold as a set does not mean it has to be displayed as one. The sectional can be broken up and scattered throughout the room, offering single person seats around the room. The sectional can be put all together to form an “L” or “U” shaped couch or cubed together in the center of the room to create a large ottoman. Coffee tables and end tables should be used between, in front of or on the ends of the different sectional pieces.
