How to Make a Hallway Functional Space

While it is largely a passage to get from one area of the house to another, a hallway can be much more than that when properly outfitted. Even in a narrow hallway, it’s possible to squeeze some functionality into this stretch of walkway. Wider hallways tend offer more storage possibilities, something most homes could use more of.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the middle of a wide hallway into a small workspace. Equip the area with a narrow desk and chair. Make sure there is ample space to walk around the furniture to avoid creating a safety hazard. Keep the area stocked with supplies for writing notes or paying bills.

    • 2

Line the hallway with enclosed shelving to store out-of-season items.

    • 3

Place a small bench and floor lamp in the hallway to provide a spot to rest or a spot to put on or take off shoes before entering or leaving the house. Hang a mirror over the bench to allow for quick appearance checks before heading out the door.

    • 4

Outfit the area with peg racks to hang jackets, purses and keys as a secondary designated area for everyday items. It will help to alleviate creating piles of clutter throughout the house.

    • 5

Hang floating shelves on the wall and store small and medium baskets or tins to store everyday essentials and to add texture to the space. Prop a small chalkboard on a shelf to serve as a communication center among family members.
