Golden oak has a nice, warm yellow tone that mixes well with yellow-toned poplar. This can, however, create an overabundance of yellow in the room, which you might not prefer. Break this up with another color, such as blue or green, which can be brought in through accessories, throw pillows and even drapery panels. The overall effect will then be balanced. Avoid using any other yellow in the room.
Natural pine is a very light, almost colorless wood with a creamy finish. This is a very good neutral wood color that can be mixed with just about any wood, including poplar. Look for natural pine furniture that has been coated with a clear finish to protect the wood. This is a soft wood and easily can dent or become scratched. Warm up the space with hints of yellow or red because pine is such a pale wood.
Chestnut is a reddish brown wood that mixes well with poplar doors that have a greenish cast. The brown complements the green and provides a little more color for the room. If you want to avoid a washed-out or tone-on-tone look in a room, chestnut is an ideal choice. Bring out the red tones in the wood, which contrast with the green of the poplar, with red accessories placed around the room.
Walnut is a light brown wood, with subtle undertones of green and yellow. Its warm color coordinates well with poplar. To contrast with these two woods, add blue or purple accessories to the room. This creates a visual balance. Walnut is a darker wood, so it will not make the room appear too washed out and it can be paired with numerous colors.
