How to Hide a Room From the Front Door

The view from the front door gives your guests their first impression of your home. If a room visible from the entryway doesn't make the best impression, you have several options to redirect the view or visually block off the room. The privacy barriers also give those in the room more privacy from the people walking into the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the components of the entryway to steer your guests away from the room. For example, if the room is off to the left, position items such as coat racks, shoe shelves and benches so your guests focus their attention to the right.

Arrange furniture to block the view of the room. Position tall pieces such as a bookcase or china cabinet so that they hide the room without blocking the room's entrance.

    • 3

Set up a room divider screen to block the room's door. This option is easy to move around so if you don't always want the room hidden you can simply move it out of the way.

Hang a curtain from the ceiling that you are able to pull across to hide the room as desired. Attach a lightweight, high-tension wire anchored to the wall at the height where you want the top of the curtain to run. Hang the fabric panels on the wire to create your curtains.

Keep the door on the room closed if it has a door. Paint the door the same color as the wall around it so it blends in and is less noticeable.
