Hang curtains over the door. Curtains are an unconventional and visually interesting technique that not only very effectively hides the door but also are a great way to add a pop of color, especially for a rental home or apartment where you’re not allowed to paint the walls. Another benefit is that curtains come in an endless selection of colors and patterns, so you can easily find some that will match the décor in your room.
Hang fabric to hide the door. Put up an ornamental textile such as a Persian rug on the wall over the door. Or, for a less expensive option, find a cheap rug or an ornamental wall hanging with an interesting print or pattern in colors that complement the furnishings in the room. Put up a quilt or bedspread for an even more budget-friendly solution. Or create your own textile by using fabric paint on a bed sheet or piece of canvas.
Hide the door with furniture. Use a large piece, such as a bookcase, wardrobe, cabinet or bureau. Even such smaller pieces as a grandfather clock, tall potted plant or small tree that may not cover the door entirely will serve the purpose, as they not only visually indicate that the door is not to be used but also hinder its usage. Or lean a floor-to-ceiling mirror against the wall over the door for another good option.
Stand a folding screen in front of the door. These screens come in styles ranging from standard and simple to very elegant and ornate. Such a piece will add a sophisticated bit of Asian-inspired flair to your room, and it can be quickly folded up and set aside when you want to use the door. Or make your own folding screen. Use hinges to attach three or four panels to each other, and decorate them however you please.
