How to Repaint Your Armoire

Similar to slipcovering a couch or staining a sisal rug, repainting furniture is an inexpensive method of redecorating. Rather than purchasing a new armoire to match your newly painted walls, the one that you currently own can be repainted to match with indoor latex wall paint from any home improvement store. Even an inexpensive armoire found at a yard sale or antique shop can be “spiffed up” with a coat of paint to make it look new again.

  • Newspaper or drop cloths

Instructions

    • 1

Lay drop cloths or newspapers down on the floor to protect it from paint splatter. Empty the armoire of its contents. Move the armoire into the center of the room so that you can reach all sides of it comfortably. Remove the doors by unfastening the screws that hold the hinges in place. Lay them face up and flat on the drop cloth.

    • 2

Rub medium grit sandpaper over every section of the armoire to be painted, including the entire outside, the outer face of each door and the inside, if necessary. Rough up the surface to make the new paint adhere better. Run a damp rag over the sanded surfaces to pick up any loose paint or wood particles. Let air dry for half an hour.

    • 3

Pour 2 inches of interior primer into a paint pan. Cover every sanded surface with a thin layer of primer using a paint roller for larger sections and a paint brush for smaller sections and areas containing intricate molding. Wash the paint pan, roller and brush. Let the primer dry overnight.

Repeat step three with interior paint. Let dry for four to five hours before adding a second coat if necessary. Once the desired effect has been achieved, let dry overnight.

Reattach the armoire doors and move it back into place.
