How to Add a Computer Desk & Sectioned Wall Unit

Setting up an office in your home can help you get more done if you can provide yourself with a comfortable place in which to work. Adding a computer desk to your office gives you a convenient place to do your daily work, and setting up a sectioned wall unit on top or nearby gives you a handy spot to store the items you need to run your business effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space available and determine the best place for the computer desk and the sectioned wall unit, and how you want to arrange them. Decide whether you want the wall unit on top of the desk, beside it or behind it. You need enough wall and floor space to comfortably contain the configuration you desire, plus enough space along the walls or in the corners for any other furniture you want to use in the room.

    • 2

Locate the electrical outlets closest to the proposed location of the computer desk. Decide which outlet you will use to supply power to the computer, monitor and peripheral devices. You can use an uninterruptible power supply, also known as a UPS, or a surge protector with a long cord, but avoid using extension cords if at all possible.

    • 3

Plug the power strip or UPS in to the electrical outlet, then move the computer desk to the spot you have chosen but do not push it against the wall. Run the power cords you will use to plug the computer and peripheral devices up through the holes in the bottom of the computer desk. Tape those power cords to the desk so they will not slide down when you move it.

    • 4

Move the desk against the wall, then plug in your computer, monitor, printer and peripheral devices. Turn the devices on to make sure you have a good connection.

    • 5

Set the sectioned wall unit in its desired location -- next to the computer desk, on top of it or behind it. Stock it with the items you need to access most frequently as you work.
