How to Make a Large Decorative Storage Ottoman

A large ottoman can serve multiple purposes. In addition to providing extra storage, it can act as a footstool or more seating. Building a custom storage ottoman is a relatively simple process, even if you don't have advanced woodworking skills or expensive tools. Using basic supplies from home supply and craft stores, you can make an ottoman that is both functional and decorative.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch out the basic rectangular box that will form the base of the ottoman, making a note of the dimensions -- the top and bottom pieces should be slightly larger than the rectangle formed by the sides. Cut out planks of wood or plywood for the box: two identical pieces for the top and bottom, two for the long sides and two pieces for the shorter sides. Choose dimensions that fit your room. A 3-foot by 2-foot ottoman will provide space for a variety of items. Most home building supplies will cut the wood for you.

Treat the sides of the ottoman to create the desired finish. For a clean look, leave the sides plain. If you want an upholstered finish, wrap fabric around the side panels and use a staple gun to secure it in place. Create the look of wooden carving by gluing faux molding strips onto the perimeter of each side.

Use a drill and screws or hammer and nails to attach the side pieces of the ottoman base. Center the bottom piece on the frame and use nails or screws to secure it. Leave the top of the box open. Glue furniture felt to the bottom corners of the base or attach small caster wheels to allow the ottoman to slide easily.

Sand down any rough spots on the base and lid piece of the ottoman, focusing on the edges and the bottom of the lid to avoid splinters. Use a rough grain sandpaper or a hand sander. Paint the two pieces and allow them to dry completely.

Cut a rectangular piece of foam padding in the shape of the ottoman lid and glue it in place. Cut out a large rectangle of decorative upholstery fabric that is 6 inches wider than the lid on each side. Choose a fabric that will hold up to heavy use: corduroy, denim, leather or brocade, for example. Lay it print side down on the floor and center the lid, padded-side down, on top of the fabric. Wrap one side of the fabric around the padding and staple it to the back of the lid. Pull the opposite side tight and staple it in place. Wrap the other two ends around the lid and use the stapler to secure the fabric.

Use a drill to attach two hinges on the inside of one edge of the box. Attach the opposite edges of the hinge to the lid so it can lift open easily.
