Decorating With Mirrored Room Dividers

Decorating with mirrors can make or break a room. Mirrors reflect everything in front of them without filtering out the parts of the room you want to keep hidden. This makes the placement of mirrors in a room critical. A room divider separates a large room into smaller spaces, but the mirrors double the effect of everything they are placed across from. Avoid problems with mirrored dividers, and use them effectively in your home to separate spaces without creating a decorating dilemma.
  1. Add Light

    • Mirrored room dividers do not always have to be used to separate spaces. The mirrors can be used to improve the lighting in a room. Place a mirrored room divider in a corner to reflect the light from a fixture across from it. It can be a table lamp or a floor lamp. Even a well-placed up-light will work. Doing so will brighten the corner of the room and keep light from being absorbed by dark corners.

    Increase Space

    • Transform a small room into one that looks wider by using a divider with a mirror on both sides. This is an especially useful idea in a room that two people are sharing. The double mirrors will make each side appear larger. The mirrored divider can also take the place of a floor-length mirror.

    Hiding Storage

    • Use a room divider with mirrors to camouflage storage. Place storage boxes, umbrella holders or shelving behind a mirrored room divider. The divider will conceal what you've stored. At the same time, the mirrors will reflect the wall opposite the divider, creating the illusion that the divider is the wall.

    Improve a Great View

    • For a room with a stunning view, use a mirrored room divider to double the view. Place the divider directly across from the window with the view. The mirror will reflect the vista. This will also increase the brightness of the room by bouncing the outdoor light from the window into the room.
