How to Replace a Closet Door With Curtain Tracks

Doors only come in so many varieties. Unlike doors, curtains come in many styles, colors, fabrics, sizes and thicknesses. As an alternative to a closet door, using curtains allows you a creative way to express and add personality and softness to your room. Using curtain tracks, not unlike hospital room curtains, makes for easy opening and closing of the curtains. Select curtains with colors and patterns that complement and enhance your room, giving it a flowing wall effect, as opposed to the hard and cold feeling of a traditional closet door.

Instructions

Remove the existing closet door. Leave the molding and casing should you decide to replace the door in the future. Close the door and loosen the hinge pin by tapping the bottom with a hammer and nail. You can also place a flathead screwdriver under the hinge’s head and tap with a hammer until loosened. Pull out the pin and continue with the other two door hinges.

Open the door slightly after removing the pins and gently take the door off its hinges so it does not fall on you or the floor. You may also want to remove the door’s knob and latch if you want to use them on another door. Remove the hinges from the door frame with a screwdriver or drill.

Measure the area above your closet door frame to determine where to place the curtain track, either in front of the door frame or inside your closet, depending on where you want the curtains. Ideally, the track should be about halfway between the top edge of the door frame and the ceiling. Based on the number of the track's brackets, measure the spots to place the curtain track’s hardware, to match. Mark each spot lightly with a pencil.

View your marks from a distance to check for evenness. Insert pushpins into the marks, run a string between them and observe the string to further ensure evenness. Adjust as necessary. Once you confirm a level line and even spacing, drill holes for the curtain track hardware. Insert the brackets, using the hardware, including screws, plugs, or plates that come with your curtain track. Many tracks are adjustable, so as necessary, change the size of your track to match your door frame and bracket placements.

Clip and hang your curtains to the curtain track. You may choose just one curtain panel that moves from side to side or two panels, depending on the size of your closet’s door frame. Hem the bottom of your curtain panels if they are too long. If making your own curtains, measure from the track to the floor and cut at least 1 inch from the bottom so your fabric is not sweeping the floor.
