Height and Dimensions For a Wet Bar

Location

• The location dictates how much space is available for a wet bar, and this area, at the very least, requires a sink, which means plumbing must be nearby. Determine where the existing plumbing runs to find a potential spot for your wet bar. You also have the option of running the plumbing to the location; however, this will require more work and cost. Common locations for wet bars include existing nooks, unused closets or a family room, either on the main living level or in the basement. Once you decide on a location, use the available space as a guide for the bar dimensions.

Components

• The specific elements you want to include in the wet bar will affect how large you make the area. A small bar sink is typically used, along with a mini refrigerator, counter work space and shelving or racks for glasses and other necessities. You might also want a separate wine storage unit to keep bottles at optimum temperatures. Get the measurements of each component you want to include to ensure you can fit everything into the space.

Front Bar Area

• If you want a seating area in front of the wet bar, you have additional dimensions to consider. The typical bar height is 42 inches from the floor to the top of the bar counter. If you plan to place bar stools at the counter, you'll need at least 12 inches of overhang on the front side of the bar. You can reduce the amount to 6 inches if guests will just stand at the bar. When determining the length of the front bar area, leave 2 feet per bar stool for comfort.

Establishing Dimensions

• Measure the space available in the desired location, particularly if you're using a confined space, such as a closet. Determine how much of the room you want to allocate to the wet bar to help figure out the dimensions, particularly if you plan to have a seating area at the front area of the bar. Mark out the area with tape or string to visually determine if the dimensions will work.
