Large Toilet and Shower Designs

Bathrooms and bathroom furniture and appliances come in a variety of shapes and sizes and affect the way you design your bathroom. A large toilet and shower are nice because of the comfort and space they offer. However, they also have a bigger design footprint and can make a bathroom seem smaller, especially one that is already small. There are several options for designing a bathroom with a large toilet and shower.
  1. Separate

    • One design idea for a large toilet and shower is to separate the two as much as possible. Install the shower on one end and the toilet on the other end of the bathroom. This helps to avoid clutter and imbalance in the bathroom; if the toilet and shower are near each other, the rest of the bathroom might look empty and the part with the toilet and shower might look lopsided.

    No Tub

    • Another design idea for a bathroom with a large toilet and shower is to eliminate the bathtub. This is especially a good idea in smaller bathrooms. A bathtub takes up a lot of floor space in a bathroom, and when combined with a large toilet and shower, the bathroom might feel very cramped and small with a tub as well. Remove the tub to open up the bathroom and create more floor and wall space.

    Large Bathrooms

    • Large bathrooms are ideal for designing with large showers and toilets, simply because they offer more space, and thus, more design options. Large bathrooms, especially master bathrooms, can have more elaborate designs, such as a large shower stall, a toilet in a corner or even a separate water closet, and a jetted tub. Dual sinks and a large vanity can fit into the design as well, and the bathroom can even connect to a large walk-in closet. Some large master bathrooms also have room for more luxuries, like a small beverage refrigerator or even a fireplace.

    Basic Guidelines

    • Your plumbing lines, square footage and shape of your bathroom are the factors that determine how you can or cannot design a bathroom with a large toilet and shower. Toilets should have space for at least 16 inches from the center of the toilet to either wall on the side, as well as an area of at least 30 by 48 inches clear in front of the toilet. Shower stalls should be at least 34 by 34 inches wide, with a clear space in front at least 36 inches long. Showers that are 60 inches wide or more should have a clear space in front at least 36 inches deep and as wide as the shower. Also, shower doors should always open outward toward the bathroom, rather than inward toward the inside of the shower.
