Red brick fireplaces look stunning when they’re first installed, but as time and heat wear down the brick, the reds can become faded and look old and out of place.       Paint the brick to restores red brick worn down from years of constant use. You can paint the brick red to restore its original look or a different color to capture the essence of your room or serve as the room’s focal point. Clean the brick thoroughly prior to applying the paint, using a scrub brush and water. If stains and dirt remain, use a mild detergent. Sherwin-Williams advises using two coats of interior acrylic latex paint with the use of a paint roller or brush. Apply each coat thinly and evenly.

      Stain the brick to restores its original color by darkening it and washing away the faded colors. Use a masonry stain or a stain specifically for red brick. Prior to applying the stain, read the manufacturer's colors; you may have to thin the stain. Stir the stain, pour it into a paint tray and apply to the brick, using the paintbrush. Use gentle, even strokes to apply a thin coat. You may have to wipe off the stain after applying it; the manufacturer's directions specify.

      Add decor to your fireplace. A black decorated screen or a mirror resting on top of your mantle may be the missing piece that brings your fireplace together. Other ideas include hanging a painting above the fireplace or going with a classic feel by placing a bookcase near the fireplace.
