How to Frame a Rounded Doorway

A rounded doorway, one that has an arched top rather than corners, adds a gentle and organic curve to your home, but it can be hard to frame. While the bare doorway itself can be attractive, you may wish to add trim to it to bring it into harmony with the rest of your door. Use flexible trim to get the look you want, adding both visual and tactile texture to your doorway without the need to order specially-cut casing.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the rounded doorway using a measuring tape, including all the areas that you want to trim.

    • 2

Cut a piece of flexible trim that matches the measurement you found in Step 1 using a hand saw. Flexible trim is made out of a type of resin that is easily cut.

    • 3

Apply an S-shaped line of construction adhesive to the flat side of the flexible molding.

    • 4

Press the adhesive side of the flexible molding to the edge of the doorway, bending the molding so that it fits closely.

    • 5

Hold the molding to the door for a few seconds to ensure that it sticks. Construction adhesive has an instant grab and when you remove your hands, the molding will stay where you put it.

    • 6

Stabilize the molding using finish nails and a hammer, placing one nail through the molding every foot or so.
