How to Build a Toilet Box

When you are staying in a rustic cabin or going camping, you may not have access to a traditional porcelain toilet. Although you could have a toilet installed inside of a cabin, your budget may not allow for a toilet installation. One solution is to build a basic toilet box that is filled with sawdust. Not only is a sawdust toilet box inexpensive to construct, but it is also odor-free and can be used just like a traditional toilet.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 wood boards, 1 inch thick, 18 inches square
  • Nails, 1 inch long
  • Hammer
  • Plywood, 3/4 inch thick, 18 inches square
  • Handsaw
  • Hinges
  • Screwdriver
  • Toilet seat cover
  • 10-gallon bucket
  • Sawdust

Instructions

    • 1

Place four wooden boards upright along one of the long sides, positioning the boards into a square. Nail the touching edges together using 1-inch long nails to secure the square in place.

    • 2

Cut a hole from the center of an 18-inch square of plywood using a handsaw to measure 12 inches in diameter.

    • 3

Place the plywood on top of the wooden square box, then attach the plywood in place along one side using two hinges. This enables you to open and close the plywood lid.

    • 4

Screw a standard-sized toilet seat in place over the hole on the plywood lid. This creates a more "user-friendly" toilet box.

    • 5

Fill a 10-gallon bucket 3/4 full with sawdust.

    • 6

Open the lid of the toilet box, and place the 10-gallon bucket inside. Position the bucket so that the opening will be directly underneath the hole in the lid. Close the lid for use.
